The draft angle is the amount of taper for molded or cast parts perpendicular to the parting line. It can be measured in degrees or mm/mm (in/in).

• Reduces the chance of damage to the part due to friction during release
• Reduces wear and tear and chances of damage to the mold
• Ensures a uniform, smooth, unscratched finish when required
• Ensures the integrity and uniformity of other surface finishes and textures
• Reduces overall cooling time by lessening or eliminating the need for unconventional ejection setups
• Most, if not all, of these benefits offer either direct or indirect overall production cost reductions

• Draft angles are generally a requirement of injection molding design (though there are a select few soft materials, like nylon, that can get away with draft angles of zero).
• Draft should be a part of design for manufacture, and all stakeholders and contributors should be aware of its need at the outset of the design process. This includes product designers, design engineers, and of course, the customer. This allows considerations for design requirements to be taken into account.
• Any draft is always better than no draft.

1) A draft angle of 1½ to 2 degrees is required for most parts

This rule of thumb applies to parts with mold depths of up to 2 inches. At this size, draft as low as 1½ degrees will allow for an easy, non-damaging release from the mold when the expected shrinkage of the thermoplastic material occurs.

2) Draft should average about an additional degree for each inch of depth

For deeper or larger parts, more draft is required to account for the additional surface area (and potential for friction upon mold release).

3) Draft should occur toward the “top” of the mold

In other words, the draft angle should follow the direction of the mold moving up or away as it separates. If you imagine a hollow box with drafted walls, the open top would be slightly wider than the bottom when draft is applied correctly.

4) Textured parts require more draft — sometimes much more

For parts where intricate textures or other raised or recessed surface features are designed,

draft should be added to the initial optimal 1½ to 2 degrees at the rate of another 1½ degrees per thousandth-inch (0.001”) of surface depth.

5) All components of a piece should be drafted

For complex geometries or parts with several tension-easing features like ribs, gussets or louvers (all integral components of good part design), ideally, all of these features — essentially, any area of contact with the mold — should incorporate a draft angle.

6) For metal-on-metal molding functions, more draft is required

This does not refer to injection molding metal, but rather to mold designs where one metal mold component makes direct contact with another.

Typically, 3 degrees of draft will be required to ensure that the mold can separate properly.

7) Draft may have to be incorporated on two sides of a part.

If the parting line for a molded part is in the middle (as with, for instance, a solid cylindrical part), draft should be incorporated on both ends of the part. This is because there are essentially not one but two mold release actions, both of which require draft.

8) At a bare minimum, half a degree of draft should be incorporated into vertical surfaces

This standard should not be adhered to in typical cases, but is more of a guideline when design requirements dictate a nearly uniform angle from top to bottom of a part wall or vertical surface. Half a degree of draft can provide a reasonable compromise between designs requiring straight walls, and the requirements of the injection molding process. In general,

however, performance and part throughput will not be as favorable as going with 1½ to 2 degrees of draft.

9) Again: Any draft is better than no draft

This point is important to remember (and repeat), especially if designers are highly resistant to incorporating draft. If a product design discussion does reach this extreme point, it is still beneficial for the engineer to advocate for some degree of draft, no matter how small. It is unlikely in most design cases that a perfectly straight, zero-degree draft angle is required.

10) Draft is a requirement — not a suggestion — for successful part production

Another point that benefits from mentioning twice: Draft is not a “nice-to-have” feature of design to manufacturing. It’s an important component of a well-designed part and an efficient, high-quality production process. A lack of draft angles can (and likely will) lead to an unacceptable number of rejected parts, and can damage expensive molds. Longer cooling times and complex part ejection requirements can slow production down to an unmanageable and unprofitable speed. In short, just about any other solution is preferable to forgoing draft angles in your injection molded parts.

It’s also important to remember that draft angles are just one component of an effectively designed injection molded piece. Design for manufacture is one of the easiest ways to improve the quality and efficiency of your injection molding process, and it never hurts to stay up to speed on all injection molding best practices. Wall thickness, material selection, ejection, shrink rates, finish/texture, wall depth, and manufacturing capabilities will influence the draft angle selection, When designing a part or before mold design, apply as much draft angle as possible at wall side—a general rule of thumb is 1 degree of draft per 1 inch of cavity depth, but that can change with the aforementioned factors. Try following these general guidelines:

• 0.5 degrees on all vertical faces is strongly advised.
• 1 to 2 degrees works very well in most situations.
• 3 degrees is minimum for a shutoff (metal sliding on metal).
• 1~3 degrees is required for light texture.
• 3~5 or more degrees is required for heavy texture.

Injection mould tooling can be textured by different means, which may vary according to tool manufacture method, timescale, budget, material and supplier facility limitation.
Aluminum tooling (and others) which is typically machined rapidly by a CNC process often uses bead, sand or vapour blasting to minimise budget and time. In practice, the final surface varies by supplier and can be influenced by the personal technique of the operator as well as the precise bead/abrasive material used. I’ve found it best to obtain moulded sample parts from the moulder/toolmaker in question, so that their specific process can be seen and approved, with their sample becoming the standard reference for all parties to abide by.

Steel tooling, where spark erosion may be used to define final surfaces, can utilize the various textures available by the spark erosion/EDM techniques. Those are well defined and controlled by standards and applied by most suppliers. Guide plaques and reference strips are available for these and can be obtained from the machine manufacturers as well as other engineering supply houses/sources, Such sources can generally also supply polishing grading and gloss finish grading bars for other material finishes. These are commonly used to keep time and budgets tight. But sparking creates sharp cavities with a hardened surface. This may or may not be desirable. Sharp textures do hold dirt more than softer forms.

Where time and budget is available, the best and widest range of textures to the source is the proprietary photo-etched patterns, available from various suppliers, all of whom can provide full sample books and individually moulded plaques. and Akron, are examples. These companies produce specific easy-clean textures with soft form cavities, developed for the vehicle industry to aid in keeping bumpers and suchlike looking good for the customer.

With all texturing, draft angles must be allowed, dependent on the depth of surface change. Otherwise scuffing will occur during part ejection.

The SPI Mold Classifications were developed by the U.S. Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE), with the intent of having a simplified definition of the type of injection tool for thermoplastics required for a set production need.

These guidelines are intended to be just a reference that frequently further evolve, on a project by project basis or depending on the customer so that they better reflect what is required of a specific tool.

The different classifications will dictate differences in tool design, construction, materials, and components.

The following classifications are guidelines to be used in obtaining quotations and placing order for uniform types of molds. SPI MOLD CLASSIFICATIONS OF INJECTION MOLDS UP TO 400 TONS

Customer is to approve mold design prior to start of construction. All molds are to have adequate channels for temperature control. Wherever feasible, all details should be marked with steel type and Rockwell hardness. Customer name, part number and mold number should be stamped on all molds. All molds and large components should have adequate provisions for handling, i.e., eyebolt holes, prybar slots, etc.

1. Class 101:  Extremely High Volume
   Extremely high volume production injection tools built for lifetime cycles exceeding one million.
2. Class 102: High Volume
   Medium to high volume production injection tools built for lifetime cycles not to exceed one million.
3. Class 103: Medium Volume
   Medium volume production injection tools built for lifetime cycles not to exceed 500,000.
4. Class 104: Low Volume
   Low volume production injection tools built for lifetime cycles not to exceed 100,000.
5. Class 105: Prototype Only
   Prototype only tools are built for lifetime cycles not to exceed 500.

Class 101 Tool – Cycles: One million or more

Description: Built for extremely high production. This is the highest priced tool and is made with only the highest quality materials.

• Detailed tool design required.
• Tool structure components to have a minimum hardness of 28 Rc.
• Cavity and cores must be hardened to a minimum of 48 Rc range. All other details, such as sub-inserts, slides, heel blocks, gibs, wedge blocks, lifters, etc. should also be of hardened tool steels.
• Ejection should be guided.
• Slides must have wear plates.
• Temperature control provisions to be in cavities, cores and slide cores wherever possible.
• Over the life of a tool, corrosion in the cooling channels decreases cooling efficiency thus degrading part quality and increasing cycle time. It is therefore recommended that plates or inserts containing cooling channels be of a corrosive resistant material or treated to prevent corrosion.
• Parting line locks are required on all tools.

Class 102 Tool – Cycles: Not exceeding one million

Description: Medium to high production tool, good for abrasive materials and/or parts requiring close tolerances. This is a high quality, fairly high priced tool.

• Detailed tool design required.
• Tool structure components to have a minimum hardness of 28 Rc.
• Cavities and cores should be hardened to a minimum of 48 Rc range. All other functional details should be made and heat treated.
• Temperature control provisions to be directly in the cavities, cores, and slide cores wherever possible.
• Parting line locks are recommended for all tools.
• The following items may or may not be required depending on the ultimate production quantities anticipated. It is recommended that those items desired be made a firm requirement for quoting purposes.

Class 103 Tool – Cycles: Under 500,000

Description: Medium production tool.

• Detailed tool design recommended.
• Tool structure components must have a minimum hardness of 18 Rc.
• Cavity and cores must be 28 Rc or higher.
• All other extras are optional.

Class 104 Tool – Cycles: Under 100,000

Description: Low production tool. Used only for limited production preferably with non-abrasive materials. Low to moderate price range.

• Tool design recommended.
• Tool structure components can be of mild steel or aluminum.
• Cavities can be of aluminum, mild steel or any other agreed upon metal.

Class 105 Tool – Cycles: Not exceeding 500

Description: Prototype only. Tool to be constructed in the least expensive manner possible to produce a very limited quantity of prototype parts.

• All components are optional

Notes and Comments:

1. Class 101: Extremely High Volume, Class 102: High Volume and Class 103: Medium Volume production tools, if at all possible, should be designed and manufactured to run fully automatic cycles with automatic ejection.    Class 101, Class 102 and Class 103 tools should be designed to best accommodate the selected method of automated part removal from the mold.
2. All tools, with the exception of C105, should have adequate cooling for temperature control.
3. Wherever feasible, all components should be marked with steel type and Rockwell hardness approximately.
4. All tools should have transport eyebolt holes on the top side. With the exception of Class 105, transit eyebolt holes should be machined in all plates.
5. Customer should approve tool design prior to the start of manufacturin

CLASS 1 UNIT INSERT

1. Detailed mold design required.
2. Insert retainer to be uniform hardness of at least 280 BHN.
3. All molding and/or functional details are to be made of tool steel hardened to at least 48
R/C.
4. Slides must have wear plates.
5. Temperature control provisions to be in cavities, cores and slides wherever possible.
6. Over the life of a mold, corrosion in the cooling channels decreases cooling efficiency
thus degrading part quality and increasing cycle time. It is therefore recommended that
plates or inserts containing cooling channels be of a corrosive resistant material or treated
to prevent corrosion.
7. Parting line locks are required to be on all molds.
8. Insert retainers must have leader pins and bushings or some similar guidance system.

CLASS II UNIT INSERT

1. Detailed mold design recommended.
2. Insert retainer to be uniform hardness of at least 165 BHN.
3. Cavities and cores must be 280 BHN or higher.
4. Water channels to be included.
5. All other extras are optional.

CLASS III UNIT INSERT

Can be constructed from aluminum, cast metal, cast epoxy or any material with sufficient strength
to produce minimum prototype parts.

Important: Refer to the general specifications to complete the details of this section, except for prototype molds.

The proper material selection and observing uniform wall thickness in injection molded plastic parts, helps avoid potential issues such as sink marks and warpage. We recommended using the plastic part design guidelines in the table to the right as thicknesses vary by material:

Overall wall thickness should be greater than or equal to the ideal amount, but thinner wall sections greater than or equal to the acceptable minimum are achievable. Wall thickness is geometry and application dependent. We recommend designing load bearing surfaces with ideal thickness or greater.

In thermoplastic injection molding, part quality and cycle time depend strongly on the cooling stage. in this case we study some alternative cooling devices for the injection mold cooling design for core, The expected result is an improvement of the part quality in terms of shrinkage and warpage.

Baffles and bubblers are sections of cooling lines that divert the coolant flow into areas that would normally lack cooling. Cooling channels are typically drilled through the mold cavity and core. The mold, however, may consist of areas too far away to accommodate regular cooling channels. Alternate methods for cooling these areas uniformly with the rest of the part involved the use of Baffles, Bubblers, or Thermal pins, as shown above.

A baffle is actually a cooling channel drilled perpendicular to a main cooling line, with a blade that separates one cooling passage into two semi-circular channels. The coolant flows in one side of the blade from the main cooling line, turns around the tip to the other side of the baffle, then flows back to the main cooling line.

This method provides maximum cross sections for the coolant, but it is difficult to mount the divider exactly in the center. The cooling effect and with it the temperature distribution on one side of the core may differ from that on the other side. This disadvantage of an otherwise economical solution, as far as manufacturing is concerned, can be eliminated if the metal sheet forming the baffle is twisted. For example, the helix baffle, as shown in above, conveys the coolant to the tip and back in the form of a helix. It is useful for diameters of 12 to 50 mm, and makes for a very homogeneous temperature distribution. Another logical development of baffles are single- or double-flight spiral cores, as shown in above.

A bubbler is similar to a baffle except that the blade is replaced with a small tube. The coolant flows into the bottom of the tube and “bubbles” out of the top, as does a fountain. The coolant then flows down around the outside of the tube to continue its flow through the cooling channels.

The most effective cooling of slender cores is achieved with bubblers. The diameter of both must be adjusted in such a way that the flow resistance in both cross sections is equal. The condition for this is:

Inner Diameter / Outer Diameter = 0.707

Bubblers are commercially available and are usually screwed into the core, as shown in above. Up to a diameter of 4 mm, the tubing should be beveled at the end to enlarge the cross-section of the outlet; this technique is illustrated in Figure 3. Bubblers can be used not only for core cooling but are also for cooling flat mold sections, which can’t be equipped with drilled or milled channels.

NOTE: Because both baffles and bubblers have narrowed flow areas, the flow resistance increases. Therefore, care should be taken in designing the size of these devices. The flow and heat transfer behavior for both baffles and bubblers can be readily modeled and analyzed by Upmold Cooling analysis.

A thermal pin is an alternative to baffles and bubblers. It is a sealed cylinder filled with a fluid. The fluid vaporizes as it draws heat from the tool steel and condenses as it releases the heat to the coolant, as shown in above. The heat transfer efficiency of a thermal pin is almost ten times as great as a copper tube. For good heat conduction, avoid an air gap between the thermal pin and the mold, or fill it with a highly conductive sealant.

If the diameter or width is very small (less than 3 mm), only air cooling is feasible. Air is blown at the cores from the outside during mold opening or flows through a central hole from inside, as shown in above. This procedure, of course, does not permit maintaining an exact mold temperature.

Better cooling of slender cores (those measuring less than 5 mm) is accomplished by using inserts made of materials with high thermal conductivity, such as copper or beryllium-copper materials. This technique is illustrated in above. Such inserts are press-fitted into the core and extend with their base, which has a cross section as large as is feasible, into a cooling channel.

For large core diameters (40 mm and larger), a positive transport of coolant must be ensured. This can be done with inserts in which the coolant reaches the tip of the core through a central bore and is led through a spiral to its circumference, and between a core and insert helically to the outlet, as shown in above. This design weakens the core significantly.

Cooling of cylinder cores and other round parts should be done with a double helix, as shown above. The coolant flows to the core tip in one helix and returns in another helix. For design reasons, the wall thickness of the core should be at least 3 mm in this case.

1. Die casting tooling trial duration:
   Normally, the duration is 20 shots cycle time.
