Plastic injection molding tolerance standards

By |August 18th, 2017|Categories: Design Develop Engineering, Injection Molding Technical, Mold Design Study, Plastic injection molding|Tags: , , |Comments Off on Plastic injection molding tolerance standards

Plastic injection molding tolerance standards Establishing tolerance with respect to product has significance importance on moldability and cost. It is recommended to indicate only critical dimensions with tolerances on a drawing. Depending on application, a division into three tolerance class can be made: Normal, Medium & Fine Cost of manufacture for Medium Tolerance part  will be 1.7 times Normal toleranced part and it will be 3 times for Fine toleranced part. General molding tolerances are shown below Drawing code Dimension (inch) ABS AcetaI Acrylic Commercial Fine Commercial Fine Commercial Fine A= Diameter* To 1.000 0.005 0.003 0.006 0.004 0.005 0.003 B=Depth** C=Height** 1.000 - 2.000 0.006 0.004 0.008 0.005 0.006 0.004 2.000 - 3.000 0.008 0.005 0.009 0.006 0.007 0.005 3.000 - 4.000 0.009 0.006 0.011 0.007 0.008 0.006 4.000 - 5.000 0.011 0.007 0.013 0.008 0.009 0.007 5.000 -6.000 0.012 0.008 0.014 0.009 0.011 0.008 6.000 - 12.000 0.003 0.002 0.004 0.002 0.003 0.002 D=Bottom Wall 0.004 0.002 0.004 0.002 0.003 0.003 E=Side Wall 0.003 0.002 0.004 0.002 0.005 0.003 F=Hole Diameter* 0.000 - 0.125 0.002 0.001 0.002 0.001 0.003 0.001 0.125 - 0.250 0.002 0.001 0.003 0.002 0.003 0.002 0.250 - 0.500 0.003 0.002 0.004 0.002 0.004 0.002 0.500 and over 0.004 0.002 0.006 0.003 0.005 0.003 G=Hole Depth [...]

Injection Molding Defects And Solutions

By |August 18th, 2017|Categories: Design Develop Engineering, Injection Molding Technical, Mold Design Study, Plastic injection molding|Tags: , |Comments Off on Injection Molding Defects And Solutions

Plastic Injection Molding Defects And Solutions Molding Flash of Injection Molding defect Solving molding flash problems Definition molding flash occurs when a thin layer of material is forced out of the mold cavity at the parting line or ejector pins location. This excess material remains attached to the molded article, and normally has to be manually removed. Causes Worn or poorly fitting cavity/mold plates Including, mold plate deformations and obstructions (grease, dirt, debris)https://upmold.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=page# Insufficient clamp force The machine clamp force must be greater than the pressure in the cavity (that is, clamp opening force), to sufficiently hold the mold plates shut. Overpacking Overpacked sections cause increased localized pressure. Non-optimal molding conditions Including, material viscosity, injection rate, and runner system. For example, high melt temperature, which makes a less viscous melt. Improper venting An improperly designed venting system, a very poor venting system, or a venting system that is too deep. Remedies Ensure correctly fitting mold plates Set up the mold to seal properly. Clean the machine from any obstructions. Add pillar support or thicken the mold plates if there is any deformation of the mold plate during the molding process. Avoid overpacking Select machine with higher clamp force Vent appropriately Use the material supplier recommended venting size. Optimize processing conditions Reduce [...]

Plastic Shrinkage Rate Chart

By |August 16th, 2017|Categories: Injection Molding Technical, Material Characteristics|Tags: , , |Comments Off on Plastic Shrinkage Rate Chart

Plastic Shrinkage Rate Chart Plastic Shrinkage rate is a volume contraction rate of polymers from the melt state and the cooled condition that will determine the molding parts dimension and accuracy, it is expressed in percent. Semi-crystalline polymers (e.g: PBT or PP) always show a higher shrinkage than amorphous polymers (e.g: PS or PC) because when cooled down semi-crystalline polymers will see part of their macromolecular chains re-arranged to form crystallite, that is a well-organized structure, leading to less space needed for the same amount of atoms. This volume contraction of polymers often leads to wrapped parts and dimension differences between manufactured parts and the mold (the die if we consider extrusion as the processing technique). Plastic shrinkage rate is strongly depending on the polymer itself but also on the processing conditions applied and part design. A standard method to measure “molding plastic shrinkage”, ie contraction compared to the injection molding tool, is the ASTM D955. Other international standard methods related to plastic shrinkage are ISO 294-4 (for thermoplastics) and ISO 2577 (for thermosets). Drilling hole size chart

By |July 22nd, 2017|Categories: Glossary & Correlating, Injection Mold Manufacturing|Tags: |Comments Off on Drilling hole size chart

Drill Size Chart For Tooling Machining Manufacturing The drill size chart provides a list of standard size drill bits in several measurement systems, including fractional, metric, wire gauge number, and letter. The decimal equivalents of the diameters are shown in both English and Metric units. Fractional sizes are measured in inches, while metric sizes are measured in millimeters. The wire gauge and letter systems refer to tool diameters that increase as the wire gauge decreases from #107 to #1 and then continues from A to Z. The drill size chart contains tools up to 1.5 inches in diameter, but larger tools are also commonly used.
